How to donate materials to the Annual Used Book Sale…

The library accepts books, magazines, videos, DVDs, music CDs and cassettes, talking books on CD or cassette, and record albums. 

Simply take any items you wish to donate to any BCLS branch library during open hours. Staff can help you unload, if needed. Upon request, the library will issue a Gift Books & Materials Receipt for the number of items received at the time of donation. The donor is responsible for estimating fair market value for income tax purposes. Items must be in good condition. 


*Please do not bring donations to the book sale. Our volunteers categorize materials ahead of the sale to make shopping easier
*Please make sure your items are free from mold, insects, offensive odors, and damage
*We are not able to accept reference materials such as encyclopedias and dictionaries

45th Annual Book Sale (August 1-3, 2019)

Be a savvy bargain book and media hunter at the Friends of the Bay County Libraries’ 45th Annual Used Book Sale! One of the largest in Michigan, thousands of items such as former best sellers, special interest, children’s materials, reference sources, magazines, CDs, books on tape, DVDs and more, will fill the rink at Bay County Civic Arena from Thursday, August 1 through Saturday, August 3.

The Bay County Civic Arena is located at 4231 Shrestha Dr. in Bay City. You may enter near either Bay Lanes on N. Euclid or Gordon’s Food Service on Wilder Rd. Hours are Thursday from 8 am to 8 pm, Friday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.

On Thursday, hardcovers sell for $2.00 and paperbacks are $1.00. On Friday, prices drop to $1.00 for hardcovers and $0.50 for paperbacks. Children’s books are $.50 on both days, and audiovisual items such as CDs, DVDs, books on tape and more are also priced to move. During the Saturday clearance, everything goes for $4.00 per box or bag!

The Bay County Library System serves over 107,000 residents through four branch locations in Bay City, Pinconning, Auburn, and a Bookmobile. All proceeds from the book sale are used by the Friends to buy equipment, materials, and services for the public not made possible through the library system’s operating budget. Earnings from previous sales have funded children’s reading programs, library publications, visits by children’s authors, and community meeting room furniture.

Friends of the Bay County Libraries board meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. in the Administrative Offices at Wirt Library.


The Friends of the Bay County Libraries is an all-volunteer organization that raises money and otherwise provides assistance for the enhancement of library operations.  Membership is comprised of people from throughout Bay County who feel passionate about their libraries.  The Friends are governed by a Board of Directors, who are elected annually.  The current President is John Van Looy, who can be reached at (989) 892-9726.  If you are interested in joining, envelopes which include registration and membership fee information, are available at any of the library branches. You may also print out a form, fill it out and mail it, along with a check, to our administrative office at the Alice & Jack Wirt Public Library, 500 Center Avenue, Bay City, MI 48708.
